My Review

I despise writing reviews on popular books that everyone loved yet I didn’t. And Tangled is one of them. I read this book months after it was out, not wanting to be a part of everyone reading it at the same time. I wanted to get around to it eventually, and because I really admire Emma Chase and because I have started reading books by authors going to Edinburgh, getting to know Drew Evans was next on my list.

I liked this book, but I wouldn’t say I am in the majority of loving it. There was just something about Tangled that I couldn’t just get into. I cant explain it. I thought it started a little slow and then when you entered Kate the story began to intrigue me. A playboy who sleeps around finally falling for a girl who becomes is everything? I love stories like this. How one girl can change a guy without knowing it. How was all wish we could be that one girl for that one guy. And although I did read on and get involved into the story of Drew and Kate, it wasn’t enough for me to give it 5 stars. And I hate that! But we cant all love the same books now, can we?!

Saying that, Emma really did tune into a guys head freaking brilliantly – it was like it was actually written by a guy. And at parts I was literally like “holy shit, yes, we do think this from guys” and laughing at the truth of what ‘Drew’ was saying, not just about guys and girls but about love and fighting and just the genders in general. Emma got it spot on. She made me really like all the characters involved and she had me laughing a hell of a lot at the interacts of everyone, at the thoughts Drew had, the way he reacts and she made me completely melt and adore Mackenzie, Drew’s niece. That little girl is a bloody hoot. She’s so smart for a young’un, and so incredible unaware but aware at the same time that you cant help but want to see more ‘air time’ of her on the pages.

Drew Evans is a cocky, smarmy, egotistical ponce who sleeps around but I respect him. I respect that he doesnt lead the girls that he sleeps with on. That he doesnt give them any hints of more than one night. It’s just sex – its a release to him and I respect the fact he’s not like all the other playboys who DO lead women on only to fuck them over. He gets what he wants, then goes. Simple as.

He is also work driven, which I really liked. He works hard to win clients, to keep clients and in return he gets respect (that word again) and a big fat pay check. He and his two best friends, really do put the work and hours in to make their father’s business a renowned successful. And then Kate enters and she is even more driven to make a success and a name for herself and rightly so, but Drew doesnt like this and this starts the ‘war’. I understood that Drew hated it. He didn’t want anyone to piss on his territory and although he wanted to bang Kate, his ‘war’ with her seemed to overtake that.

We watch his be a dick to her, say mean things to her but in the end, we know behind all the names is such a strong chemistry and attraction between them that in the end something is bound to happen. They go from enemies, to friends to lovers and you know what they say, there is a fine line between love and hate, and this is most definitely the fact with Kate and Drew.

Their smart mouths, their banter, their chemistry, it all made for good humour and a great love story. They are competitive against each other, also shouting their mouths off but when things change, when they become friends, that’s when the story really gets going. That’s when feelings and emotions get in the way and that’s when you see Drew fucked up. See him want to spend a weekend with a girl and not go out and get laid.

I’d also like to say, HELLO to the sex scenes. Drew has one pretty sexy mouth on him and he definitely knows how to please a lady – well he’s slept with enough to know by now. But he and Kate are pretty adventurous and you know if they are compatible in bed, they are pretty fucking screwed – in both senses. But I loved how comfortable they both were around each other, enough to just stay naked

I loved Kate. She is a strong, feisty woman who has fought damn hard to get to where she is now and shes not going to let anyone stand in her way. She has a smart mouth, she can banter and spare back and forth with Drew but in the end she is still just a woman who has a vulnerable side too. A side in which had no chance against Drew; a side which also yearned for him. I really loved her when everything went down and she didn’t back down. She held her head up and told Drew to basically ‘fuck off and leave her alone’. She didn’t give in and to be honest, I wouldn’t either if that happened to me.

I understood her questioning of his feelings after everything she knows and everything he’s said to her and really, in the end, it was down to her to think things through without being pampered by Drew (despite the fact I did enjoy those scenes), and to think if being with him was worth it, if his feelings were genuine, and you could see underneath the denying, she really was weighing to pros and cons of being with Drew.

This is what you need in books, a strong heroine who doesnt give in to the hero’s idiocy and that is exactly where Kate came in. I really did like her as a character and I like that she was the one to turn Drew’s world upside down. I cant wait to see more of her POV in Twisted.

So even though I didn’t give it 5 stars, I still enjoyed the story, I enjoyed getting to know Drew and Kate and their relationship – from start to finish and I still am going to read Twisted when it is out. Give Drew a go…he is pretty damn hilarious and loveable.

GUEST POST of Tangled (Emma Chase) by Nikki Arivel Larazo

Hi! So I guess this really is happening huh? My first ever blog guesting. What the heck, I feel like a celebrity. Or not. 😉

First, I want to thank Zoe for inviting me into her blog.

Okay, that’s not quite true. The truth is, I invited myself. I might as well incinerate my brain. Because really, one of this week’s guests is a writer (Hi Kerry! *waves*). Pressure, pressure!!! Felt like choking (myself with my own hands) when I read Kerry’s post. How can I ever write like that?! But then, she’s a writer and I’m a… Wait, I haven’t even introduced myself, have I? *face palm*

Backtrack…

Hi! I should do the introduction thing, right? Let me do it slam-book style.

What’s your name?

Nikki Arivel Larazo
Lovingly nicknamed as:

Nik

My B’Day is on:

June 28

Favorite day of the year?

Not the “red days” for sure

What is your favorite cologne/perfume?

BBW Sweet Pea

Favorite clothing brand(s)?

None. I don’t give a shit as long as I’m wearing something presentable

Music, books, movies u like?

Is this serious?

You might want to dedicate a whole book to me if we’re gonna talk about these

Ever done a prank call?

Nope.

U’r darn crazy about?

Books and book boyfriends

Kisses or hugs?

Hugs. Bear-style.

When was the last time you went on a date?

Don’t ask me this shit. That’s why I have a million book boyfriends. Haha

The first thing that comes to your mind when you hear my name or see me?

Who the hell are you?

I found this random slam book shits somewhere and used it, so excuse the cheesy questions. Basic stuff right there. And very teenager-ish minus the cursing (but I think nowadays teenagers curse more than the adults?).

Now, what do I do with my life aside from book whoring and blabbing? I actually have a degree in Plant Biology. Yes, you read that right. Science. So what am I doing here writing literature-related post? You tell me. 😉

I am currently working as a researcher in The International Rice Research Institute C4 Rice Project based here in the Philippines. I won’t bore you with the details of my work because even I get bored with it most of the time sometimes (DO. NOT. TELL. MY. BOSS.). But it’s pretty cool, really.

You might wanna ask what made me decide to have a book blog and write not-so-relevant-reviews-it’s-really-more-of-ranting.

Cue for shameless plugging.

Visit my blog to know (http://dog-earandyellowingpages.blogspot.com/p/home-page.html). Well of course that is if you’re interested. I’m not pulling out a gun on you and force you to click the link. It’s your decision to make. Although that idea seems appealing. 😉

My blog is still a newborn baby, and I’m a newbie blogger so don’t expect a lot from it when you actually visit it. Or don’t expect anything at all. Thank you very much. 😉

With all those said, you probably want me to shut the hell up and get on with the review that I promised Zoe I’ll deliver. Chill, I’m about to start. Word: about. 😉

One more thing (promise!), you notice the winky faces I put in almost every paragraph? I don’t know why I’m using it obsessively, seriously. My fingers seem to have their own brains and recognize it as a punctuation mark, I guess? So I’m adding one more stuff to my slam book,

What is your favorite emoticon?

*wink wink wink*

Oh crap, I got some twitchy eyes over there. O-kaaaay enough of this shit. Let’s get it on. *trying not to add a winky*

……….

😉

FAIL.

So… Oh yes the review! I checked Zoe’s list of the books she’s reviewed and there’s quite a lot. And what I really mean by quite a lot is 139 book reviews (Yes Zoe, I counted it manually J ← see, this is not a winky face). That’s a lot for me since I got only 10 reviews on my blog. 😉

Last Sunday (May 26) I did a “Katniss Everdeen” on Zoe, (you know the part when Katniss shouted “I volunteer!”?). Well, my volunteering didn’t actually go that way but you get the gist. For me, being a guest blogger actually feels like joining The Hunger Games. Volunteering was exhilarating at first. Then the moment that what I did sinks in, I feel like banging my head on the wall thinking, “What have I done?”. Feels like the biggest sin I’ve committed up until this moment. Haha!

My initial plan was to read a new book then write a review. But I asked Zoe if I can use my previous reviews if ever I run out of time. Her being so sweet and all, said that it’s okay. Unfortunately, I did run out of time because something came up with my family and I couldn’t squeeze in reading a book for this week. Luckily, I’m currently obsessed with this book I’ve read 9 days ago and I want to continue ranting about it, here in Zoe’s blog. And more luckily, upon checking Zoe’s list, she hasn’t done a review for it! 😉

What book am I talking about? Well, the book that’s making a buzz in the bookworm world these days: TANGLED by Emma Chase. Yes people, THAT book. 😉

Hail, the Gandhi of male thoughts… Drew Evans. 😉

My Review

“Do you see that unshowered, unshaven heap on the couch? The guy in the dirty gray T-shirt and ripped sweat pants?

That’s me, Drew Evans.

I’m not usually like this. I mean, that really isn’t me.”

Those are the opening lines of the novel. I really, really loved the way this novel was written. Emma Chase is a friggin genius for thinking of writing some parts of this novel in a “voice-over” narration. And from a guy’s POV, goodness!

I read this book on its release day when I was on medical leave (girl stuff, ick!) from work for three continuous hours (well, including tweeting about the book). I think that was one of the fastest reads of my life. I swear I couldn’t stop and it felt like I was racing with Drew’s brain until the end. Haha. Not a single nanosecond did I feel bored with this story. It’s super fun hanging around Drew’s thoughts! Not to mention, super hot too! 😉

The day after, I went back to work and was tweeting sporadically about this novel that I’ve read that I can’t seem to get out of my head. Then out of nowhere I started thinking, “Wait! There was a movie I’ve watched that has the same opening narration. What movie was it?!!!”. It took me a while and a lot of random Google searches (you wouldn’t wanna know what key words I used in the search engine) before I found out the movie title! I thought I’ll be spending my whole afternoon (get this people; I was at work that time. Hahaha!) looking for it. But I was successful with that little mission, hooray! I was thinking about the movie LIMITLESS!

“You see that guy?

That was me not so long ago. What kind of guy without a drug or alcohol problem looks this way? Only a writer. Strangely enough nobody believed that I actually had a book contract.”

Those are the opening lines in the movie. You getting what I’m trying to say here? It probably doesn’t matter to you, but it fascinates me because I loved that movie and now I loved Tangled (not the movie) too! And I find it awesome because it feels like Drew’s right beside you talking directly to you!

Now, since that movie reference is out of the way I can proceed with my blabbing!

The story is about a good-looking, sexy as hell investment banker named Andrew Evans. He goes by the name Drew. He’s involved in buy-and-sell-businesses business or some shit like that. He’s got a bright and funny mind. He was once a player and never been in love. Until Katherine Brooks.

“… a guy can’t become a man until he’s met the right woman.”  – Drew

Did I mention I love Drew Evans? No? Good god I didn’t?! Well hell, I love Drew Evans! He is my ultimate book boyfriend since I finished the book! Who wouldn’t want a guy like him? Not just because he is so yummy he could have been the sole ingredient in a whole cook book series (cook books can have series too right?) and ultra rich (he’s driving an Aston Martin V12 btw *drools*), but definitely because he is soooo hilariously cute! Yes, cute! What, I can’t use that to describe a steamy hot guy?! And the fact that he’s so into his niece makes my heart melt and my skin tingly. This makes him just sooo… perfect? Ugh.

On the other hand, Drew is an asshat! But he is just too lovable to account that. I’m a girl and I shouldn’t be agreeing with his take on things especially on his thoughts involving girls. Take this for example:

“Once I’m done, I’m DONE. I’m not the kind of guy who rides the same roller coaster twice… Don’t look at me that way. I’m not a bad guy. I don’t lie; I don’t sandbag women with flowery words about a future together and love at first sight… Okay, maybe that’s not exactly true. But I can’t help it if they see me, fuck me and suddenly want to bear my children.”

He’s got a good and strong point there, right ladies? It made you want to re-think some of your nasty thoughts, yes?

———————————————————————————————-

There are a lot like of those stuff in this book and if you want to dig deep into Drew’s awesome mind, READ THE BOOK.

You hear me? Go grab a copy and read the book until you die.

No, seriously: READ THE FREAKING BOOK! (Zoe, if you haven’t read the book this line’s for you too! But if you have, please disregard this tag. Haha)

If you’re tired of some suicidal teens or kinky adults this is your chance to escape! This one’s a fun read and the whole story’s got a light-hearted vibe on it.

AND I AM TELLING YOU… After reading it? All the ladies, single or not, would want a piece of Drew Evans or more.

——————————————————————————–

That’s it! I guess at some point I have to end this thing, right? I keep telling myself, “This is not your blog. Don’t act like you own this shit.” 😉

Thank you Zoe for graciously inviting me here accepting my offer to be a guest blogger. Last night I thought I wouldn’t come up with anything. What do the writers call that? Oh yes, writers block. But I’m not a writer. So I’ll call that one, mental breakdown. 😉

I thought doing this will be stressful. I keep forgetting that I may not be a writer, but that doesn’t mean I can’t come up with something worth reading. J

I had fun doing this!

Thank you Zoe for giving a newbie blogger like me the chance to waste a page on your blog. 😉

~ Nikki, xx

To Zoey: Please don’t remove the winky faces. I feel like they are vital parts in this post. Haha
