GUEST REVIEW by Anna Bloom

Before I post Anna’s review, you all seriously need to add The Uni Files to your TBR list.

Anna has become a good friend and I’ve had sneaky views of this book and it really looks amazing to read! It’s my next book to read after my tour book ;). But yesss, Anna has kindly written about The Uni Files for ya’ll to know what it is about 😀

—————————————-

Synopsis

When Lilah McCannon realises at the age of twenty-five that history is going to repeat itself and she is going to become her mother—bored, drunk and wearing a twinset—there is only one thing to do: take drastic action.

Turning her back on her old life, Lilah’s plan is to enrol at university, get a degree, prove she is a grown-up and blow a big fat raspberry at all those who doubt her, especially her dad.

As plans go, it is a good one. There are rules to follow: no alcohol, no cigarettes, no boys and no going home. But when Lilah meets the lead singer of a local band and finds herself unexpectedly falling in love, she realises her rules are not going to be the only things hard to keep.

With the academic year slipping by too quickly, Lilah faces a barrage of new challenges: will she ever make it up the Library stairs without having a heart attack? Can she handle a day on campus without drinking vodka? Will she ever manage to read a history book without falling asleep? And most importantly, can she become the grown-up that she desperately wants to be and learn the hardest lesson that her first year of university has to teach her: The Art of Letting Go?

The Uni File: Year One – The Art of Letting Go is the humorous diary of a young woman in the throes of a mid-twenties breakdown. It will leave you asking the question: can you ever stop history from repeating itself and if you could, what would you do to stop it?

————————————————

Anna’s guest post

Did you know that there were two versions of The Uni File – Year One before I finally finished one I was happy with? Of course you don’t. None of you know about The Uni File yet because we are still two months away from publication and you haven’t had a glimpse into the world of Ben and Lilah yet. It is a world to me, a world that I live and breathe and spend every waking moment thinking about.

So why did I end up with the version that I did? What did it have that the others didn’t? What made it set my imagination on fire to such an extent that it would become something that I would put my real life on hold for?

Well the truth is I don’t really know. It just evolved and my characters and the storyline changed along with it, every version took the characters one step further until I finally knew who I wanted them to be. For instance in my first draft Lilah was not called Lilah she was called Jessie and the Uni File was not a diary but a blog. Jessie used to have a diary but her brother Tristan who was also her best friend got drunk one night and read it out to the whole pub. Jessie left the diary at home and decided to have a blog instead on her first day at Uni.

I don’t know when Jessie became Lilah but I guess at some point she did and I am glad of that fact. The Uni File would just not be the same with a Jessie at the helm instead of a Delilah. Just the name Delilah speaks crazy for me and opens up so many different avenues to explore. For example Lilah hates it when people call her Delilah, but Ben does, normally when he is taking the piss out of her. All of her good friends call her Lil which I would never have thought works but it kind of does all the same.

Tristan did not remain in his cuddly best friend Brother role. He is Tristan the Arse in this version, but you will have to read it to find out why.

Now Ben. Ben was initially called Ben Chase and he did not play guitar. Yes that is right and I will repeat it just to make it clear, BEN DID NOT PLAY GUITAR! I know… I thought of a premise for a story where my Ben did not play guitar? I just can’t believe it, but the evidence is there so it must be true. Ben Chase was a member of the football team who seemed like an enigma to Jessie. Always warm and friendly but legged it at every available opportunity. I cannot even tell you how far this is from my Benjamin Chambers who is strong and solid, caring and thoughtful as well as super talented and outrageously hot (of course).

In my second draft I went the other way, Lilah was Lilah by that point but she was stuck in a dramatic storyline involving blackmail and family feuds. Ben was Ben Chambers but his band Sound Box were uber famous and it was Ben that was running away to University to escape the limelight and not Lilah who was changing her life in a bid to save herself.

I was halfway into this version when I woke up at five in the morning and had an epiphany. I knew exactly the kind of book I wanted to write. I stripped it all back to just Lilah and Ben and then I started to create a world around them, I gave them friends who all have their own stories, I gave them an environment where anything could be possible and I gave them the chance to create something that could be perfect. I wanted it to be laugh out loud funny, I wanted it to be beautiful and romantic. I wanted it to be a love story but a real one at the same time, one that people would read and fall in love with the characters but also understand and accept the decisions that they had to make. More than all of that I wanted to write a novel that people would believe, a love so right that it would feel it had actually happened, a world so convincing it would all feel real.

Have I succeeded? I hope so, but I guess I will be waiting for you guys to let me know when you finally get to enter the world of Lilah and Ben and The Uni Files.

Excerpt:

I looked around the basement, sipping whatever concoction some guy poured out of a cooler. He called it a ‘magic potion’ and I hoped that didn’t mean he rufied it. I don’t know how Monica talked me into this.

A horde of girls clad in nothing more than lingerie pushed past me as if I were nothing more than another one of the paddles on the paneled wall. I tried to pull back but then I came face to chest with a set of abs and felt all of the magic potion cascade down my cardigan.

I gasped once the cold liquid soaked through both my layers and hit my skin.

“Too bad, that was such a nice sweater…” A deep voice said.

I looked up, all the way past the chiseled six pack and to a pair of cool blue eyes. “Maybe you should just take it off up in my room and I can help you dry off.” He leaned in, his full lips right on my ear. “Or make you wetter.”

My breath caught in my throat, rendering me speechless. Luckily my best friend Monica jumped between us, pushing the guy back so I got a full view of him and realized he was only wearing a loin cloth and a large smile.

“Down John Boy.” She scowled at him and then turned to me, almost knocking her beret off. “What the hell happened to you?”

“I-I-I spilled my drink.”

Monica’s eyes narrowed as she looked down at the red liquid soaking through my gray sweater. She whipped her head around to the loin cloth clad guy. “Was this your fault? Are you trying to get my friend naked?”

He held up his hands, a cockeyed grin on his face. “Purely an accident, Lib.”

Ah, now I knew where I’d seen him before. He had come into the coffee shop we worked at a few times. I don’t think he even glanced in my direction more than to hand me his student ID to pay, but was always calling Monica ‘Lib.’ I’m guessing because she was an extreme liberal.

Monica’s boyfriend, the governor’s son Trey Chapman, pushed through the crowd. When I usually saw him he was polished in dress pants and a dress shirt, but his Halloween costume was nothing more than a pair of American flag boxers, a dress shirt, and some gray hairspray. He looked ridiculous. I still don’t know how Monica talked him into the Clinton and Lewinsky couples costumes.

“Hey, I’ve been looking for you.” He slipped his arm around Monica’s waist. “What’s going on here?”

“Your big brother here spilled a drink on Melanie to try and get her naked.”

“Hey!” John yelled.

“It wasn’t his fault,” I piped in. “It’s crowded here and he just ran into me. It’s fine.”

“Fine?” Monica raised her eyebrows. “That Hermione costume you’ve been wearing since middle school is covered in ever clear and Kool aid. That’s not fine.”

“I haven’t worn this since middle school!” Okay, truth was, it was my go-to costume. I bought it for the first movie’s midnight showing and wore it for every movie opening and Halloween since.

“Whatever.” Monica turned her head to Trey and tugged on his shirt. “You can just wear Trey’s shirt.”

GUEST POST by Emma Louise

So today, Emma is guest reviewing again on The Book Lovers.

She will be taking about her book, The Mistake and answering a few questions.

———————————————————————–

41vysW3rtrL._AA160_The Mistake is about a love triangle between Daniel, Nina and Thomas. The narrative is shown on the present day of a wedding and then it continues onto the party. Every now and then, there are flashbacks to help the readers figure out what will happen next. The idea came about when I was in my second year at University during a Fiction class and we were given a five minute warm up to get our brains thinking. My lecturer says “write about flowers.” Instantly, I thought of a wedding and a beautiful bouquet of flowers but the person holding the bouquet has a dark secret. I decided to self-publish because I came impatient; I wanted people to know about my novel this year rather than hanging around waiting for an agent to agree to my terms and to find a book deal. I wouldn’t say that self publishing is difficult, but I wouldn’t say it’s easy either. Self-publishing gives you complete control and that’s what I want. The difficult part is the promoting because you ask for help, and some people are more than happy to help and others only care about themselves and their own novel. In my opinion, the best thing about writing is definitely the characters. I love creating the characters and getting to know them. It’s fantastic to be in complete control of the people who you’re writing about.

Q. Who is your favourite author?

A. I have three – is that cheating? So, the main one is JK Rowling. I was heavily bullied whilst at High School and it seemed that the one way I could keep myself happy was to read one of the Harry Potter novels. I fell in love with Daniel Radcliffe when he hit the big screen and I’ve been a diehard fan ever since. My other two favourite authors are Nicholas Sparks and Paige Toon. Nicholas Sparks is my favourite American author of all time – nobody will ever beat him to the top spot. He has a way of writing descriptively that is so beautiful and captivating. Each time I read one of his novels, I learn something new. He knows how to take a simple love story and make it beautiful and new. Paige Toon is my favourite romance author here in the UK. I’ve met Paige at a book signing and honestly, that woman is one of my idols. I have so much respect for her. Her books are beyond incredible. She’s a real inspiration to me and I felt a connection with her when I first picked up one of her books.

Q. Can you tell us a little bit about your blog?

A. Of course. My blog can be found at http://www.emmaiswriting.wordpress.com and it’s where I do interviews with authors, post book reviews which tend to be posted straight after I’ve read them and then there are updates of my writing. I also have Twitter @EmmaIsWriting if anyone has any questions

Q. Where do you see yourself in ten years?

A. In ten years, I’ll be 32. Wow. That’s old! I see myself working as an editor in a publication house. Hopefully in Manchester as it’s a beautiful city. I’m not worried about marriage or children, because for me, my books are my life and right now, I’m focusing on my career.

Q. Do you have a writing degree?

A. Yes, I have two. I have a Bachelor Honours in Creative Writing and Film Studies, and I also have a Masters in Creative Writing. Degrees will allow you to be taken serious in the publishing industry.

You can find Emma’s debut novel, The Mistake, on Amazon. Follow the link below: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mistake-What-happens-terribly-wrong/dp/1490412840/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1374502388&sr=1-1&keywords=the+mistake+emma+louise+dagnall
