Getting Rooted in New Zealand – Jamie Baywood

final book design

It was always my dream to live abroad when I was growing up in California.  I had bad dating experiences in California and read in a New Zealand tour book that the country’s population at 100,000 fewer men than women.  I wanted to have some me time and an adventure. New Zealand seemed like a good place to do so. Although I intended to have a solo adventure I ended up meeting my husband in New Zealand.

I consider myself an accidental author. I didn’t go to New Zealand with the intentions of writing a book about my experiences there. I had funny experiences that I had trouble believing were true. I wrote the stories down to stay sane. I wrote situations down that were happening around me and shared them with friends. The stories made people laugh so I decided to organize the stories into a book and publish in the hopes to make others laugh too.

One of the first people I met was Colin Mathura-Jeffree from New Zealand’s Next Top Model. I had no idea who he was or that he was on TV when I met him. He is friends with my former flatmate. We had a steep staircase that I kept falling down. Colin taught me to walk like a model so I wouldn’t fall down the stairs.

In New Zealand, I had a lot of culture shock.  One of the most memorable moments was learning the meaning of the Kiwi slang word “rooted.” One night I was brushing my teeth with my flatmate and I said, ‘I’m really excited to live in this house because I have been travelling a lot and I just need to settle down, stop traveling and get rooted’. He was choking on his toothbrush and asked me if I knew what that meant because it had a completely different meaning New Zealand than it does in the States.

I had the opportunity to write and perform for Thomas Sainsbury the most prolific playwright in New Zealand. I performed a monologue about my jobs in the Basement Theatre in Auckland.  The funny thing about that experience was Tom kept me separated from the other performers until it was time to perform. I was under the impression that all the performers were foreigners giving their experiences in New Zealand.  All of the other performers were professional actors telling stories that weren’t their own. At first I was mortified, but the audience seemed to enjoy my “performance,” laughing their way through my monologue. After the shows we would go out and mingle with the audience. People would ask me how long I had been acting. I would tell them, “I wasn’t acting; I have to go to work tomorrow and sit next to the girl wearing her dead dog’s collar around her neck.”

I love making people laugh more than anything else. I feel very grateful when readers understand my sense of humor. I plan to divide my books by the countries I’ve lived in. My next book will be about attempting to settle in Scotland.

About the book Getting Rooted in New Zealand:

Craving change and lacking logic, at 26, Jamie, a cute and quirky Californian, impulsively moves to New Zealand to avoid dating after reading that the country’s population has 100,000 fewer men. In her journal, she captures a hysterically honest look at herself, her past and her new wonderfully weird world filled with curious characters and slapstick situations in unbelievably bizarre jobs. It takes a zany jaunt to the end of the Earth and a serendipitous meeting with a fellow traveler before Jamie learns what it really means to get rooted.

Except from The Long Game

Spencer’s face was still upturned, and her skin glowed a pale silver in the moonlight as she smiled. Without giving any thought to how she would react or whether it would set back any progress I’d made so far, I kissed her.

Spencer’s response wasn’t immediate, but after a moment, she kissed me back, pressing her hands into my chest. I laid one hand against the side of her neck and tangled the fingers of my other through the silky hair at the back of her head. Her mouth was hot on mine, and she tasted sweet as our tongues met.

Long before I was ready for it to end, she broke off the kiss. She looked up at me breathlessly, her lips parted. Our faces were so close I could feel her warm breath against my cheek.

“I guess your prediction wasn’t so far off after all,” she said with a playful grin.

I smiled and pulled her back to me for another kiss.

My Review

*Arc provided by Jade in return for an honest review*

I have been fan of Jade’s from technically the very start. When she had less that 100 LIKES on Facebook. I found one book of hers and then from then on I was hooked. I am so proud and absolutely love that she is getting the recognition that she deserves. She is a great person to know and talk to and she writes amazing books (Everything But is one of my favs). Bullet definitely put her on the map and I am so privileged to again, be a part of her book tour for Rock Bottom (#2).

Firstly, if you haven’t read Bullet, where have you been these past couple of months? Go read my review HERE then go and buy it. Rock Bottom is about Ethan from Bullet and to be honest, not a massive fan of him so I really hoped that Jade would be changing my mind about him in Rock Bottom.

And Jade has done it again. I despised Ethan in Bullet but my god, Jade makes you change your mind about him, makes you understand him and learn about him and you cant help but fall in love with him. Rock Bottom is definitely a 5 star book and as always, I love every word she has written in this book. She makes you feel. So many feels. You will be angry at Ethan, you will then switch and feel sorry for him, want him to change himself for the better, want him to love and be loved back and be the best guy that he can, putting his drug and alcohol abuse behind him and of course, try to overcome his past.

If you have read Bullet, then you know the story between Ethan and Val, and basically how toxic it was, how Ethan was a damn right douchebag to her after a while (I did like him, and then no-way José). Taking drugs, cheating on her and just fucking her around, so when she ended up with who she did, well I was literally hoping for this ending and for her to end up with… 😉

So now in Rock Bottom, we get to the bottom of Ethan. Of his childhood, his drug habits, why he did everything to Val and to be honest, you really get to know him so much better. You begin to understand him more, feel sorry for his upbringing and the way it shaped him. But then add in Jenna – His group councillor and perhaps there is hope for Ethan after all!

I’ll start with Jenna first. Jenna is a councillor for a drug and alcohol support group and shes a damn good one at that. She understands and guides and helps everyone in the group and they all trust her with everything. She knows what to say to them to help them stay on the straight and narrow. She’s a strong character but in a way that is a front. Just like her group, she too, is broken but she doesn’t show it, she buries it away in the hope that it doesn’t resurface. She doesn’t want to relive it and her tattoo is a reminder of the past and how she won’t.

I adored Jenna. She was such a breath of fresh air, so lovely and strong but inside she was broken too. It took Ethan’s stories to hit a cord in her to make her see that she does need to figure out her own shit as she kept saying she was a fraud but you could see the love she had for her group, how much they loved her and you couldn’t help falling in love with her too.

You could see just how amazing and how great she was to and for Ethan – to his progress and to finding love again, someone to fully love everything about him and to make him see that he can overcome his addiction, that she will always be there for him no matter what and she believes in him. Their relationship was something that you just were addicted too (wrong choice of word? :P) and you will be obsessed with them both and how they both help one another.

She really is the best thing to ever be in Ethan’s life (bar Chris of course, that little cutie)

Now Ethan. He really is the guy you love, then hate then love again. He really did redeem himself, in my opinion, in Rock Bottom. It took a lot for him to admit he had a problem, for him to act upon it and for him to actually want to change, and he did it all for Chris – his son (and then Jenna). Of course, he is a douchebag and the Ethan we know at the start but he slowly lets his defences down, knows he needs to get over his addiction and Jenna seems to be his new one, which I loved. Despite the back and forth, Ethan found someone to focus on and he sure as hell wasn’t going to let her go once he found her.

He does some soul-searching, we find out a hell of a lot about his childhood and why he acted the way he did with the band and of course, to Val. He was so lost and depressed and you understand him so much more in Rock Bottom. You feel so sorry for him, for everything he has been through and you feel so proud of him for getting his life back on track, for finding Jenna and finding solace in her.

You can completely see why he and Val just weren’t meant to be, but he and Jenna totally are. They are soul mates. They understand each other, understand addiction and they really are the perfect match. Their chemistry was instant, sparks flew and they are amazing together. Even the sex connected them together and Jade always writes great sex scenes 😀

Rock Bottom is completely different to Bullet. Bullet was about the band and Val and making it in the music industry, but now Rock Bottom – it’s all about Ethan. His journey to becoming a better man and to getting over his addiction to drugs. About falling in love and being happy for once in his life. And he is, happy that is. With Jenna. And with having Chris – his son back in his life.

Chris is the cutest kid ever and I was so glad that Ethan cleaned his act up for Chris and before having him back in his life. Everything was for Chris and you can see the love Ethan has for his child and how Chris loves Ethan back too. Their bond was the sweetest!!

I cannot tell you how much I loved this book. It’s different from Bullet but I was glad. I loved that it was Ethan’s, that we got to find out so much more about him but also that he redeemed himself and that I actually love him now. Yes, you read that correct. It deals with some heavy issues but Jade wrote them perfect and she deals with them in a sensitive manner. Something I knew Jade always does!

Love you Jade and thank you once again for a brilliant book! ❤

Here is to Brad and Jet’s books now 😉

My Review

*Thanks to Netgalley for an advanced copy of Everything For Us in return of an honest review for the release day*

When I first found out about Down To You, I knew I had to have that book in my life. I demolished it right away, fell in love with Cash, loved Olivia, the sex was hot, the secret was madness and I hated Marissa. Up to Me was the same. Loved every single bit of it, the action, the love, the heroic actions of Cash and Gavin, the fear of Olivia and Marissa’s lives, and of course, the jack Daniels scene. By Jesus, that was shitting hot and of course THE HUGE BLOODY SECRET THAT COMES OUT! FRIGGING HELL. If you’ve read my review of Up To Me then you will see that came as a major surprise to me.

So when there was a third book, I wanted more of Cash and Olivia, but when it turned out it wasn’t their book, but Marissa’s, well I wasn’t sure what to expect. She was a complete bitch to Olivia, a spoilt brat and only cared about herself, yet there was something that changed in her when she was kidnapped in Up To Me and perhaps she could redeem herself somehow in Everything For Us? I knew I had to see how she would do it, and I was so glad I got to read this before the release day.

M.Leighton’s Bad Boy series is a series that is a must read. She really knows how to draw you in, makes you want to read and not sleep, makes you want to read super-fast to know the secrets and everything in the book to wanting to read really slowly and cherish every moment inside the book. And Everything For Us was not a disappointment at all. As soon as I downloaded this, I was straight to reading it, wanting to know about HIM and Marissa. I’m sure you all know who HIM is but I won’t spoil his name…not yet anyway.

This review will mention HIS name though, although most of you know exactly whom I am on about, being such loyal Bad Boy girls 😉 but for those who haven’t read the books, I’m warning you, because names will be dropped.

I’d like to say that M. Leighton has done it again. Everything For Us is a fantastic addition to the Bad Boys series. It ties up everything that we want to know from the past two books and we get to see more love, more drama with the Davenport boys, but we also get to see happy endings and a budding romance? Quite possibly. I hope M. Leighton will be writing a book for Gavin 😉

I was swooning, smiling, frustrated. I cried, I laughed, I shouted at the characters, I threw my phone down but most importantly, I was sucked into the story, wishing for Marissa to redeem herself and for Nash to be brought back into society after seven years at sea where he clearly withdrew from all human nature and feelings.

We first meet Nash at the end of Up To Me. His entrance was one of a shock to me and Everything For Us is his and Marissa’s story. Nash is a strong character, he’s had to grow up pretty damn fast and he’s grown up and developed this tough and rough exterior over the past seven years. He’s had to, to survive. He’s numb, he feels nothing and hates that he’s lived his life that way, but the anger he has just won’t go away and the need for revenge is all he knows. He needs revenge on the guys who murdered his mother and destroyed his life.

But over the book we see him falter, we see him begin to care, not just for his brother but for Marissa too. We see him give more to her than he’s ever given anyone. Although he’s cemented in his ways, he reveals things to her that he’s never told anyone, never wanted to reveal but he cares for her, he can’t stop thinking about her. It was so nice to see this tough guy slowly begin to fall for Marissa, but their relationship was anything but easy for them. They got together just to show each other a good time but over time, they both fall for one another yet they don’t say anything about their feelings. This is where you just want to bang their heads together and be like “YOU BOTH WANT MORE FROM EACH OTHER, JUST TALK”

It’s no surprise that I didn’t like Marissa in the first two books. She was selfish and a bitch and didn’t give a shit about anyone but since the kidnapping, it’s shocked her, as it would anyone and shocked her into changing. She dislikes who she used to be and is set on changing her ways, on gaining forgiveness for her actions and being the person she truly is meant to be, even if it means defying her daddy and losing her ‘posh bitch’ friends. She wants to be a good person and I was so proud of her for the way she dealt with everything, the way that she was also petrified but she pushed past it and came out the other side stronger.

With Nash he pushed her, was out to prove she could do it and she could. She pushed her boundaries on her own and with Nash (in the bedroom) and you will feel towards her – be proud of her and the way she changes and handles things.

At the end, you will love Marissa and Nash, be so happy that Marissa redeems herself and that Nash integrates back into society, that they find love with each other. Their sexual chemistry was something that you couldn’t ignore when you read it. It’s sizzling and passionate and the sex scenes just intensify their ‘relationship’. Marissa is pushed and shown things she hasn’t done before and she actually likes it. She needed someone to bring it out of her and Nash really owns her body like no other. You can easily see they should be together even if there is a secret that Nash is keeping that could come out and destroy them – even though they aren’t together.

I know you all want to know if Cash and Olivia are in this book and the answer is a big fat YES! They are the couple we all fell in love with and their story, despite not having a great involvement, does progress and we see snippets of them together and what their future holds. I loved the parts they were in because throughout everything they have been through, their love is stronger than ever.

M. Leighton really ties up everything in this book with the family secret and the murder. I loved that she gave them all a happy ending too and I can honestly say I cried at the last scene. Okay, so I always cry but this part, it was the damn sweetest ending I could ever imagine for Marissa, Nash, Cash and Olivia. Here is to knowing about Gavin and Ginger now 😉

My Review

When Laura emailed me and asked me if I would like to read her book These Things About Us and be a part of her tour, well once I had read the synopsis, I said yes. A girl looking for her mum and wanting to forget her past life, a caring guy who takes her under his wing and a broken man who despises her from first sight. What isn’t there to love?

For a debut, Laura really sucks you into the story. From the synopsis, nothing is revealed and so throughout the book you keep thinking about Tony’s past life, what her secrets are, what Trace’s secrets are, why he doesn’t like her, why he’s intrigued by her. Because there are so many questions you are drumming up throughout each page, you just keep flicking through the pages, needing to find the answer to your questions.

There are also a few shocking revelations along the way too – which of course I am not going to spoil for you but I didn’t expect any of them to happen. Especially with Wes. I’m probably blind but I did not catch on.

I started this book on a lazy Sunday afternoon and had finished it on the Monday evening (damn work getting in the way). It’s a quick read, but only because you will be reading at lightning speed. You will be sucked into the story, into the drama, into the secrets and as I’ve mentioned, the synopsis reveals hardly anything and you will not want to put the book down. Nope, not at all.

I love books like this, the ones where you just don’t want to sleep or eat, and Laura really made this happen with me. Although work did get in the way, I was reading it through lunch and on the way home and then just lounged on the sofa reading it. Yupp that is how much I was infatuated by her book.

“You look at me like that with your big eyes and I think of ripping those clothes off your body.”

Trace is broken. He sleeps around to get so exhausted he falls asleep, he blows hot and cold and he has a temper, but on the other side he’s caring, he does have a heart and music is a big part of him. His past is something that although he wants to forget, he can’t and then along comes Tony and everything is brought up once again, hence why he doesn’t want to be near her and acts like a complete and utter douchebag when they are in the same proximity. But to me, there was just something about him that I liked. Despite his douchebaggyness, I was drawn to him. I really liked him and I knew underneath everything he was actually a sweet and caring guy, he just had a bad past that made him act out.

He does blow hot and cold with Tony but you can see that he does like her, even if he doesn’t or won’t admit it to himself or to her. I know many of you will probably dislike him at first, but I actually didn’t. Is that weird? I really did like him from the start. His cocky demure, his tattoos, especially the spider on his neck, his musicality and then his sweet side. The side that I suppose no one has seen for quite a long time. But there is just something about Tony, or should I say Kitty that just brings it out in him.

When the secret is out, ohhh I just wanted to jump into my kindle and hug the shit out of Trace. You understand why he didn’t like Tony at the start but then why he let himself get to know her and fall for her and then at the end, my heart broke. I’m not going to spoil it but dear god, there NEEDS to be a book two. I need to know what will happen with Tony and Trace.  Like right now!

Tony is a strong girl. She’s had to be with the father she has but her past is one that she wants to forget and change. From being a party girl, who slept around and had a bucket loads of cash to flying over to London to find her mother with a backpack full of clothes and hardly any money. She’s doing her best to stay afloat. She’s spunky and courageous and wants to put her past behind her and change her lifestyle and her style up. She doesn’t want anyone to know about her past – it’s off limits. She can stick up for herself, she can give as good as she gets but deep inside shes also vulnerable. She’s in London to find her mother and despite the fact she now knows Wes, shes still alone in her search, in walking around London. You really do feel for her, from the way Trace acts towards her, to wanting and needing to find her mother. All she wants is her mother, as any teenage girl would.

I really enjoyed that although she didn’t want to go back to how she was, and with Trace she was scared she was going to, admitting it out loud really was the first step and she thought being with trace would make her take steps backward yet it didn’t. She was stronger and more aware than anyone and Trace was there every step, convincing her that she would never return to the person she used to be. I was really proud of her throughout the whole book, even when sad events at the end took place.

Enter Wes, who is her new BFF and takes her under his wing so she had a job and somewhere to stay whilst she searches for her mother. Thing is, Wes is Trace’s brother and Trace is not happy at all. Wes is charming and funny and the sweetest guy around. He’s put up with shit from Trace and now that Tony has entered his life, I think he feels freer, that is has someone he can tell his secret too, as hes scared of telling his dad and Trace. Despite the fact he knows Trace’s secret and he warns Tony away, he still looks out for her. There was a time where I was like “just leave Tony and Trace along Wes” but then

I loved the chemistry between Trace and Tony. It actually is instant, even Trace acted like a dick towards her at first, they both have this hot and cold relationship, towards one another but Trace does care for Tony, in his weird way. Although he didn’t like her, he was always there for her, and Tony just couldn’t help wanting him even though he was a knobhead at times. They really were suppose to just gyrate towards one another, they couldn’t stay away and getting past the rocky start it was easy for them to be together, to spend time together and be there for one another. It broke my heart at the end but what Trace does, you can truly see that Tony is the one for him, that he will always be there for her.

I will fangirl over Laura and this book so much. I will fangirl and love Trace too. Even though I’m not allowed him because he is Tony’s, a girl can dream about an imaginary character cant she? I’m too greedy for more of Tony and Trace’s story so much so, that after this review, there is a deleted scene. Yes, I am a greedy little girl but I will always want more, so you bloody better buy this book and join me in pestering Laura for her to write book two pretty damn fast.

NOW GO and BUY IT! And then come back after and read the deleted scene.

Deal?

Deleted Scene

“This scene was in a very early draft of These Things About Us. Back then it even had a different title: Flightless. When you read the scene, you might notice that more than the title has changed since then. If you’d try to fit it into the book as it is now, it would kind of [SPOILER ALERT] happen just after they visited Trace’s mom. [End Spoiler ;D]
The scene itself is pretty spoiler-free. You can read it even if you haven’t finished the book yet. Enjoy!”

“Where are the chairs?” I asked as we stepped into the circular room. The only light came from the fluorescent tubes on the ceiling, but that was about all there was in the room besides a couple of speakers. Judging by the empty grey walls and the stone floor, this was where you brought people to be shot, not to enjoy a theater play. “Where’s the stage? Is this some kind of joke? Because it’s not funny.” I wrapped my arms around myself and looked back at the chatting people walking in behind us.

“Relax, Kitty.” Trace cupped his hands around my shoulders and guided me across the room where we turned to face the center. “This is going to be fun, I promise.”

I nodded. I was probably overreacting. Dad’s call had put me on edge. His threats still rung in my ears and this was the kind of middle of nowhere where nobody heard you scream.

“Okay.” Swallowing, I reached up to my shoulders and grabbed one of his hands for support. He wove his fingers through mine and squeezed them lightly. I barely had time to enjoy the little sparks his touch sent through my skin into the merit of my bones because the iron door thudded shut, sealing us in with three dozen strangers. And then the lights went out. I jumped back, right into his chest, and his hand fell from my shoulder to my waist. Squeezing my eyes shut, I grasped his hand harder.

Nobody was hurting me here. Nobody was going to take me away. This was theater. Dad wasn’t here.

“Ssh, it’s okay. Look at the walls,” Trace whispered close to my ear and wrapped his arm around my middle, pulling me into the crook of his body, close and safe.

The walls. I could do that. After a long, deep breath I managed to open my eyes to the strangest mural I’d ever seen, and my fears washed away. Bright colors were shining from the walls, green, purple, red, mixed into a wide scenery. I turned in Trace’s embrace, trying to get a view of the whole room without leaving my safe spot. Someone had painted a fluorescent rain forest on the walls. It wasn’t just trees and grass and bushes, though, there were animals.

Hard to spot between the leaves and branches, but there were snakes and monkeys, bugs and a tiger. It was a piece of glow-in-the-dark art.

“This is amazing,” I whispered.

“Thank you,” Trace replied.

I swiveled around again, but the mural’s light wasn’t enough to get a good look at his face. I doubted he thanked me for looking at the paintings – he thanked me for complimenting the art. His art? It had to be. It would explain his absence from work last week. But I thought he’d stopped drawing.

A pang of guilt went off in my stomach when I drew my eyes back to the detailed painting. I should seriously spend more time on getting to know him. Maybe he secretly was a theater geek.

“I-”

“Sssh.” His finger on my lips silenced me just in time for my attention to fall on a dancer. He/She/It was dancing in the middle of the room and the only way I could trace the movements was by the glowing skeleton painted onto his clothes. His face was painted as well, as one of those Mexican skulls. Mostly white, but parts were red others remained black and unpainted. From somewhere in the audience, another skeleton appeared. Both of them danced individually through the room, one of them almost bumped into us, but Trace maneuvered us a step aside as if he knew the choreography by heart. Eventually both skeletons ended up in the center of the room and stilled in their movements as they noticed each other. It was mesmerizing to watch them take each other in. They compared their hands, their feet, the ribs where their hearts would be if they had any. As if they’d never seen one of their own kind before. The first skeleton took the second one by the hand, and violin and piano sounds poured down the walls and echoed through the room.

Whatever had happened before, it couldn’t have been dancing. When the two connected, that was dancing. Their bodies were in total synch. Each movement fit. They fit

perfectly into each other. Eventually more and more skeletons appeared, whisking them apart but the initial two kept coming back to each other.

I didn’t quite understand the ending, though. A giant tiger appeared, probably carried by at least two people and it sort of ate all skeletons – they all disappeared into the belly of the tiger – until only one skeleton remained, pirouetting in the center of the room. It was the one who had appeared first. The tiger left, the lights flickered on, and the blonde girl kept twirling around and around even as the door was opened. Even as people filtered out of the room.

I held Trace back until the very end, but the girl kept spinning, and eventually we had to leave, too. There was something unnerving about her constant pirouettes and the fact that they shut her in. She probably stopped dancing the second the door closed behind us, but I couldn’t be sure.

While the rest of the audience left the building, Trace and I waited for Vince in the front room. “You know, I was expecting Shakespeare. Not… this.”

“Hmm.” A grin was obviously tugging at the corners of his mouth, but he tried – and failed – to contain it, as his hand tangled with mine again. “Vince doesn’t do traditional.”

Vince wasn’t really what I wanted to talk about. “Did you paint all that?”

“What if I did?” His thumb flicked against mine and I couldn’t help the impression that he was challenging me.

“Nothing. It’s just… stunning. You told me you didn’t draw anymore but the painting was totally amazing.” I flicked my thumb back at his and smiled up at him. “You’re not ashamed of it, are you?”

“Can we talk about something else? Anything?” Trace sighed and stepped closer, hooking his finger into one of my belt loops and pulling me towards him. I came willingly, allowing our mids to connect, but bending back just enough to keep my eyes trained on him.

Concentrating on forming words became difficult as he slipped that finger from the belt loop into the waist of the jeans, sliding it along my hip bone. I fought down the sigh

climbing up my lungs and wrapped my hands around his arms instead. “I’m not letting you distract me, Trace. Why do you want to talk about something else?”

He bent down, spilling kisses on my cheek. I let my eyes flutter close at the sweet touch. For a moment, I was okay with being distracted as his scent filled my nose and his stubble rubbed against my skin so perfectly. But then his lips brushed my ear and he whispered, “Because what I do isn’t stunning. Or amazing. You look at me like I’m… I don’t know. Like I’m worth a lot more than I really am. Like I’m a better person than I really am. I want to be that man you see, but I’m not. So we need to change the topic, because otherwise it’s inevitable that I’m eventually going to disappoint you.”

“You won’t,” I replied but mentally added I hope. Because I still wasn’t convinced that I’d survive this thing between us. I was at the theater not a club, we weren’t having wild bathroom sex and we weren’t snorting white lines – but that didn’t mean that Trace couldn’t shatter me to pieces if he wanted to.

“You don’t sound convinced.” Trace gave a husky laugh that vibrated through his chest but that I knew wasn’t real.

“I’m convinced that you’re just as talented as I think. I’m convinced your music and your art are as amazing as I think. I’m not convinced that at the end of the road, there won’t be disappointment.” I tilted my head and pressed my lips against his jaw. The simple fact that I thought I could spend the rest of my life kissing him like that proved my theory. “I think you have the power to ruin me.”

Excerpt

The shower feels absolutely amazing. The cold water hits my face washing all the dirt and ash off of me. I rinse my hair, washing it twice to make sure the smell is gone. I scrub my face getting the ash out of my pores. I stay an extra ten minutes just letting the water run off me.

Finally, I get out and grab a towel. Oh crap, wouldn’t you know, no towel. That was the downside to working on laundry day.

I peek out my bedroom door and call out to Carissa, “Riss! Can you bring me a towel?” I’m shivering from the windows being left open blowing air right over my bare skin. “Riss!”

Ugh, she’s not answering. I peek out and see she’s nowhere to be found. Oh, what the heck. I tiptoe down the hall and across the living room. Our rooms are on opposite sides of the apartment, which benefits me greatly when she brings guy friends over. We had our own bathrooms as well, leaving little to argue about.

“Where the heck are you…son of a—” I quickly cover my parts with my freezing cold hands as I hear him laugh. “Turn around!” I demand. He continues laughing as the blood drains from my face completely. My face is pale, and I could die right now. Literally die.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to disturb ya there.” The southern tone comes from his sweet lips. Eric. He blinks several times before finally covering his eyes. Oh holy balls, he just saw me naked. Butt naked. And wet.

Synopsis

When you’re acting the role of a lifetime, how can you know if love is real—or all just a part of the show?

Twenty-three year old rising theatre star Jill McCormick has built a life out of pretending. Pretending she’s happy, pretending her long-distance crushes add up to something real, pretending she’s not haunted by the dark secret that shattered her world six years ago. Cast in her first Broadway show, she desperately needs to keep her façade intact, but that’s before she comes face to face with her devastating new boss…

Hot-shot director Davis Milo knows the first rule of directing: never fall for your leading lady. Captivated by Jill’s raw talent, he fights his feelings, but watching Jill on-stage with another man is more than his jealous streak can take. Keeping things professional isn’t an option. He wants all of her.

Soon the ingénue and her director are staying late in the empty theatre, their private rehearsals spiraling into new, forbidden territory. Caught up between fiction and reality, Jill struggles to find the truth in all their staged kisses. But how can she be sure that what she feels is real, and not a part of the play? And when two people spend their lives pretending, what happens after the final curtain falls?

EXCERPT:

He glances down at the black pumps. “Nice shoes.”
As I follow his eyes, I realize my hand is on his shirt, my fingers fisted around the cloth, clutching it. I should let go. But I don’t.
Because I can’t help but notice he has that clean and freshly showered smell that makes any woman want to lean in and lick a guy’s neck. Close her eyes. Inhale, and trail a tongue all the way to his earlobe, enjoying the sound of a low groan.

“Nice shirt,” I say softly, running my index finger across one smooth button. Then I look up to find him staring down at me. His dark blue eyes aren’t cold anymore. They’re not keeping me at bay. Instead, they’re heated, searching mine.

It’s hypnotic the way he looks at me. Completely hypnotic, as the room goes quiet, the air between us charged. I press my teeth against my lips, and I think, but I’m not entirely sure, because thought has vanished, that I nod briefly, almost as if I’m giving him permission. Then he bends towards me, and my breath catches. Before I even process rationally what’s happening, his lips are on mine, and my pulse is racing.

It’s a barely there kiss, just him brushing his soft lips against mine, but I want more. So I pull him closer and deepen the kiss. He groans, and then suddenly his hands are in my hair, and he’s twining his fingers through my long, blond strands, and tugging me close. I thought I was leading this kiss, but I’m not anymore, because he’s claiming me, tracing his tongue across my top lip, then nipping at the bottom lip, then kissing me so deeply and with so much heat that I shudder. That only makes him kiss me harder, and everything else falls away because this is a kiss I can feel in every single cell in my body.

Deep, and fevered and possessive.
It makes me feel things I’m not supposed to want.

My heart pounds wildly as he presses closer, so dangerously near to me that I want him to slam me against him. Let him touch me all over. His lips own me, his hands want to know me, and I swear I might combust from this kind of electric contact. He breaks the kiss and I’m not honestly sure where I am anymore. Or who I am. I look at him, at Davis, but everything is so hazy right now, that I don’t know what to say. I don’t think he does either, because he doesn’t speak for a moment. He shakes his head, and swallows, collecting himself. As if he doesn’t know how that happened either.

“I’m sorry,” he says, then steps back, pushing his hand roughly through his hair. He looks away from me, staring at some distant point on the wall. “That was a mistake,” he says quietly.
