BOOK TOUR: Hard Knox – Nicole Williams

Hard Knox FrontSynopsis

Knox Jagger. The name inspires resent in every male at Sinclair University, want in every female, and contempt in Charlie Chase.

Charlie can be summed up in three words: independent, independent, and independent. To Charlie, Knox epitomizes everything that’s wrong with college males: prolific one-night stands, drunken senseless fights, and a body that hints at prioritizing gym time over study time.

As an up-and-coming writer for Sinclair University’s newspaper, Charlie’s tasked with getting to the bottom of who’s been dropping little white pills into girls’ drinks at parties. In an ocean of All-American boys sporting polo shirts and innocent smiles, Knox is the obvious suspect. As evidence piles up against the bad boy of Sinclair, Charlie becomes more and more certain it isn’t Knox. But when her drink is dosed at a party and she wakes up on Knox’s couch the next morning, Charlie’s left with more questions than answers when it comes to Knox Jagger.

How can Charlie ever hope to uncover the truth behind a guy so closed off he’s become . . .

Hard Knox.

My Review

***I received an copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***

I’ve loved Nicole Williams since reading Crash. Jude Ryder is my first book boyfriend from her and know I can Knox Jagger to that list as well.

I knew I had to be on the tour for Hard Knox once I had read the synopsis. It was and is definitely a book to read. It has mystery and suspense and hella laugh out loud parts. You will be infuriated with characters, love them and be a part of their story all the way to the end.

It took me a little while to get into the story, mainly because I found Charlie a little hard to like. She’s passionate and feisty and independent and will put herself in dangerous situations, not caring about her safety, just wanting to get the story. She also doesnt care who hates or likes her. Yeah, she’s really not got many, if any friends, apart from her roommate. I found her to be a bit too much at times. I was angry at her for being an idiot, angry at her for putting herself in situations she needn’t be in and of course, she made me want to pull my hair out with her idiocy in parts of the book which definitely put her life in the risk zone. On her own she was infuriating but I liked her with Knox. I liked the back and forth of them and I did enjoy seeing her break free, at times, from being so GAH at times. She let loose and I liked that about her. I liked that she stripped back and she still didn’t give a rats arse, and that was okay, because she was showing us, her. Showing us that she isn’t just some annoying journalism student who keeps people away from her. She can let them in. Like she let Knox.

Now Knox. I love a bad boy in books and at the beginning I thought he was obnoxious, a little up himself. He’s known around the university as a playboy, especially when girls come up to him at parties and put their knickers in the back of his pocket with their numbers on. He has an air of mystery around him that you just want to find out, and the more you do, the more you see the layers to him. He isn’t this bad boy, and the things he does is because of his past. He’s trying to make a difference and I loved finding that out about him. I loved finding out the secret and why he does what he does. Okay, very vague, but it will become SO clear when you get to the end and it all comes out. You will think back and be like ‘Holy crap’. He is so protective of Charlie and I loved seeing this side of him. He was also a little vulnerable in the fact he was so protective, but as I mentioned, you will see why. I loved loved loved seeing him slowly fall for Charlie but trying to stay away. He and Charlie felt very real. They went from strangers to living together and becoming friends. Their chemistry was obvious, their banter and fights were passionate and you can see the fire in both of them. Their feelings for each other. And when it comes to blows, dear God, does it come to blows 😉

I have to mention the date-rape part. I felt that although this book is about it, it was handled with care and consideration. I was freaking out at one part and I had guessed from the beginning who the culprit was – I love it when I can do that haha. Despite the fact that I felt that the date-rape storyline kind of took a back story in some parts, it all came together in the end and really did ficus on Charlie and Knox finding out who is doing this to the female college students.

If you love Nicole Williams’ books, then Hard Knox is another book to read. It’s a great read and Knox will definitely end up on your BBF list!

My Review

Indelible is the first book I have read by Bethany Lopez. I do have the Friends and Lovers trilogy on my Kindle but I have yet to get to it. When I had see this book on GR and read the synopsis, I just had to add it to my TBR list and when I saw there was a tour for it, I really wanted to be a part of it.

I actually read the book in a day. It was an easy read, I pretty much flew through the pages. Bethany writes with an ease, a way in which you don’t stop reading and suddenly you are right at the end, wondering where the time has gone because it only felt like a few minutes since you started the book.

The reason for my three stars is due to my confusion. It probably is crystal clear to other people but my confusion is over the timeline of the story. When everything happened. Was it over a few weeks? Especially when Judd was meeting Sam’s daughter, Karrie for the first time. After everything Sam said about not introducing anyone to Karrie or letting them know about her because she didn’t want guys coming in and out of her life, she certainly introduced Judd to her so soon. Or was it so soon? To me it was, but perhaps to you, it was weeks later. See, I couldn’t get my head around the timeline.

The other fact was the insta-love. One minute Sam doesn’t want anything to do with Judd then the next it’s all rainbow and glitter. But I dont read a lot of books about insta-love so is that what is it?

But despite all my confusion, I did enjoy the book. I liked the strength of Sam – the young mother. The single young mother, whom not only has to care for her two year old daughter, Karrie but she takes classes and is determined to become an art teacher. I was in awe of her, at juggling her daughter and school but she did a great job in doing so. Add in trying to have a relationship too, and you just felt so proud of her for everything she has accomplished in her life. It must be so hard to be a single mother, but she was brilliant. She had help off her parents and her friends so it wasn’t like she was alone in raising Karrie.

Bethany really showed us (Who have no children) just how it is like to deal with a two year old. The tantrums, the tiredness, the not knowing what is wrong with your child. It really puts into perspective just how hard it is for single mothers/fathers bringing up their child(ren) alone. I applaud every single parent out there.

There is a point near the end where i was so proud of Sam. For doing what she thought was right for her and Karrie and for Judd too. She was so courageous in what she did despite the hurt it caused her but what she did was the right thing to do no matter what either of them wanted to do.

Judd was pretty much amazing too. Not your typical baseball player, he has long hair, tattoos and a motorbike yet baseball is something that he cherishes and its important to him. You see him go from a bit of a player to falling in love and being responsible. One night he spots Sam in the local bar with him friend James (a girl) and he knows there is something about her. But she rejects him. The second time is much more nicer and that’s when he wants something more with her. Something that isn’t just a onetime thing. Despite not wanting a relationship – the same as Sam, they pretty much fall into one. As someone who doesn’t read a lot of insta-love stories, I just couldn’t really get my head around the fact that neither of them wanted a relationship yet it ended that way pretty damn fast, but who am I to say what is right or wrong?

He is a sweetheart when introduced to Karrie and you can instantly see how much she will and is becoming a big thing in his life. He treats her with respect and plays with her and you just fall in love with him that little bit more over the fact that although its not his kid, he treats her like his.

Although I didn’t understand why he went from not wanting a relationship to wanting one, I could see him transform throughout the book, as I’ve already mentioned. He turns into someone who is extraordinary. Who is always there for Sam and Karrie and always will be. It was actually really nice to see.

There is a twist in the book that I actually didn’t even guess and I suppose you might not either. But I was so proud of the way Sam and Judd handled it. Albeit they were both angry, they spoke about it, and dismissed this person right away for the way they acted. It was very brave of Judd to do that.

Molly and James – both Sam’s friends were such great characters. They were funny, gave great advice to Sam and Judd (James did) and were there for the two of them, especially little Karrie who was a doll. It’s great when you have friends who will support you and be there for you when things get tough, especially when you have a kid to look after too.

Although I did give this book 3 stars, it is a cute love story. A love story about finding someone who won’t disregard you because you have a kid, who will change because they have found that one they want to spend their life with and the one who will treat someone else’s kid as their own.

Judd and Sam and Karrie are such a cute family that it’s hard to not love the three of them.

Excerpt

A drop of water landed on my cheek, waking me up and interrupting my moment of tranquility. I opened my eyes and saw that the blue sky had turned grey and mean with the promise of a summer storm. This was a common occurrence around here. Short summer storms would come through on even the most beautiful of days.

“Jake, wake up!” I nudged his arm and started packing up the last remnants of our picnic before everything got soaked. He opened his eyes groggily, jumping into motion when he saw the clouds overhead threatening to dump rain all over us.

We moved quickly across the water, thanks to his speedy rowing, and were only a few yards away from the dock when the sky opened up and rain started hammering down on us. I shrieked and made a pathetic attempt to cover myself with the cardigan I was holding, while Jake just looked at me and laughed.

When we edged up against the dock I practically leapt out of the boat and carried my guitar and the picnic basket back to the shelter of the cabin. I was about to go inside to get away from the storm, but when I looked for Jake I saw that he was still out on the dock. He was

leisurely pulling the rowboat up onto the dock and flipping it over, clearly in no hurry despite the buckets of rain coming down over his head.

“What’s taking so long?” I said, rushing to the end of the dock where he was still standing, “In case you didn’t notice, we’re getting drenched!”

Jake just smiled. “Since when do you care about getting a little wet? The Nora I remember used to love running around in rainstorms.” He strode over to me and ran his hands up my arms. “It’s kinda nice, isn’t it?”

I nodded, stepping closer and looking up at him through the sheets of rain. He was gorgeous… especially when he was dripping wet. I reached up and traced his jawline, trailing my finger through the droplets of rain and watched as his eyes turned dark with desire.

Within a half a second his mouth was on mine and his hands were at my hips drawing me closer. His kiss started off slow but when his tongue met mine it became needy and impassioned. I slowly ran my hands up his hard chest and over his shoulders, pulling myself closer to him. His grip around me tightened and he moved his hands down, grabbing my bottom and lifting me up. I wrapped my legs around him and held onto him firmly.

“I want you,” he grumbled against my lips, “I can’t wait any longer.”

My Review

Two years ago, Dani had her heartbroken by her boyfriend. As painful as it was, she decided then that doesn’t want to deal with the hassle of relationships anymore. Her kindle and book boyfriends will always be there for her.

Two years later and her best friends are staging an intervention to get Dani out of her funk and back into the real world. Back into the world of dating and not holding out for her book boyfriend to be real. She needs a REAL man, not a fictional one.

Hunky fire-fighter, Liam may be just the guy. Subbing a CPR class that Dani has to attend, their chemistry is instant and they both feel something for one another the second they meet. But can Dani put aside her two year old broken heart and patch it up enough to trust her heart with Liam?

And what is going to happen when Rick decides he wants Dani back and will do whatever he can to make her his again?

If you love love triangles, then The Do-over is for you. This is utter love trianglely and to be honest I am not a fan of LT. But I did feel all the emotions. The anger, the heartbreak, the laughter, the tears. I got frustrated at the characters, at what was happening. It took me a while to decide what to give this book, because I liked the first half but then I just got so angry and annoyed at the second half. I suppose that’s what A.L Zaun possibly wanted? To extract these emotions from us, and of course it’s a LT so it’s going to make us angry. The smoking hot fire-fighter who wears his heart on his sleeve or the conniving ex boyfriend who wants her back despite breaking her heart and messing her up for others?

I started off really liking Dani. She is a book worm like me. Her kindle is her baby. She has book boyfriends; she gets emotional like me when reading a book. At one point I thought she WAS me.

She was a strong character, even though she wallowed in self-pity and hide behind books for a while. It wasn’t until her friends kicked her butt that she kind of changed. Attending a CPR class, she meets Liam and something clicks inside of her. Its like shes been set free and can feel again. She’s definitely attracted to him and it’s all she can talk about when she meets up with her friends. Thank god fate interferes and she gets to meet him again at the club they go to that night. Dani is funny, shes flirty, she knows what she wants and she is passionate too. She loves Liam with everything, it’s clear to see but she still has insecure moments, especially when she bumps into her Ex – Rick one morning. He brings up all these old feelings and shes scared that Liam is going to break her heart. That is not the case at all, because Dani is the one who messes everything up. I’m not going to tell you how, but throughout the second half of the book, Dani really started to piss me off. I hated reading about her, reading her uhm’s and Ahh’s, hated what she was doing, thinking it was okay. NO, she really annoyed me and my Twitter followers had all my tweets about her during the day. I was completely happy when one ‘friend’ Maddy – told her she wasn’t in love with Liam, just using him to get back with Rick– and Dani began to get upset over it. I wanted to high-five Maddy so much.

When everything went tits up, she hid behind her books again. It seemed her way to close out the outside world and just focus on the fairytale world. But what she did to win Liam back was actually pretty great and I applaud her for it. He definitely had thought about how important he was to her and for her to give up that one thing, well well done to her.

Liam was the best. No kidding now. Before I started reading this book, I put a pic on Twitter of a sexy fire-fighter and then when we learned Liam’s occupation, I was like “Mind reaaaader” so that fire-fighter picture became Liam to me! He is the sweetest, cutest, more amazing guy ever. As soon as he saw Dani, he just knew he had this instant attraction to her. He wanted to get to know her. And the more time they spent together, the more he fell in love with Dani. It was beautiful to see a guy love a girl so much and want to see her all the time, and take her out and love her like she should. When Dani kept having freak-outs, he was there for her, telling her that he wasn’t going anywhere, that he wasn’t her ex. He understood her insecurities and tried to help her through them

He was romantic, wore his heart on his sleeve and when everything happened near the end, oh my heart when out to him. He was hurting badly, but needed time to think things through. He had been through so much in his life, from his personal life to his job and he had shared everything with Dani, so to be hurt that badly by her, dear god, I wanted to jump in my kindle and hug him tight.

There is a HEA thank the god, because I would have been having a tantrum is there wasn’t. It is a cute ending though but I still couldn’t forgive Dani for what she did. She pretty much pissed me off a lot hahah. But that is just me.

Rick is a character that you love to hate and hate to love. I went from hating him and liking him and feeling sorry for him. I hated that he wanted Dani back; that he manipulated her for so long, making her doubt everything. But then I loved his friendship with Maddy – who obviously harboured feelings for Rick. She made him change so Dani could see the new him, but I think in some ways she was changing him for her, for him to see her and to love her instead of Dani. I loved Maddy and felt so sorry for her having to see the guy she likes try to win his ex back. That must have killed her.

The Do-Over left me with an unanswered question which I’m hoping there will be a second book or even a novella? Did Rick and Maddy get together? What the hell happened with these two because they were kind of just left hanging. With no answer about what happened, if Rick found her etc. PLEASE let me know, its’ been bugging the hell out of me!

Other than the whole love triangle, it is a good book. But I have no patience for love triangles, they just annoy me and I get irritated reading about them. I’ve tried to keep this review both positive and honest, and this is me being honest. It’s a good book, but not for me despite there being scenes that I loved. But everyone feels different about books so don’t take my word on it, you may enjoy it!

A choice that will mean life or death.
But she won’t know anything… until she wakes up.

College sophomore, Lila Spencer lived Friday night twice. She doesn’t know how or why, just that she did. As if she split in half and went in two different directions.

Out clubbing with her friends, Heather and Nilah, the girls rock it out and party hard. What begins as an innocent night will lead to a deadly fight for their lives, and Lila might be their only chance for survival.

In bed with her boyfriend, Jay, Lila is safe and warm as she drifts to sleep in the arms of the man she loves. Until she is sucked into a horrifying nightmare of her friends’ deaths.

As the sunlight warms her face on Saturday morning, the two scenarios collide. But there can be only one outcome. Will she wake up in her warm bed with Jay by her side, devastated and grieving for her friends? Or was she there to save them?

My Review

College sophomore Lila Spencer has lived Friday night twice. One where she is out celebrating her friend’s birthday downtown and another where doesn’t go out and stays in with her boyfriend Jay.

She doesn’t know how but it’s like she was split in half.

Out clubbing with her friends, what starts off as an innocent night ends up with the girls lives in danger and it’s down to Lila to try and save them all.

In bed with her boyfriend Jay, Lila is save in his arms but once asleep she is sucked into a nightmare about her friend’s death.

Completely freaked out about the two dreams when she wakes up, which scenario will be true? Will she be grieving for her friends while she’s tucked up with Jay? Or did she save them?

The emotions I felt through this book… I can’t even put words to it. If you are looking for a fluffy romance novel, then this is NOT the book you should read. If you follow me on Twitter, you would see just how affected I was reading this book (It was a few weeks ago now though). It pulled at my heart strings, it made me feel sick to the stomach but I couldn’t stop reading it. I had to know just what in the hell was going to happen.

As a debut novel, Megan Hand has written such a fantastic story. Not only is it powerful, but what happens in the book really does go on everywhere. (I’m not going to tell you what it is, as it’s a major spoiler) Just trust me when I tell you that this is a book you definitely have to read. I know I say this for every book I read but this one is completely out of my comfort zone. I had no idea it would be that far out of my zone when I started it, but I am really glad that I did. Although it’s part of the tour, it was on my TBR list before I signed up.

I wasn’t even that far into the book when I had to stop at a certain chapter. It got too much and my stomach was in knots over what I was reading. As I’ve said, it’s not the usual book i tend to read (Even thought I thought it would be angsty then HEA – my love) and it horrified me to know that this actually does happen out there. (I know I’m talking in riddles, but I don’t want to spoil it for you) and that there are some messed up people out there. I felt sick reading her ‘dream’ and was hoping and praying that Lila would get away and save her friends.

I was crying my eyes out with sadness over the pain of the situation, knotted up whether anyone would help her get away. Oh, I can’t tell you how scared I was reading it. It was too much for me but I powered through. This all happened within the first 25% so you can imagine what I was like for the rest of the book!

Lila, the heroine, is a strong character. She’s gobby and stubborn and sarcastic but she loves with everything. She loves her friends and her boyfriend Jay and would do anything for them – anything to keep them save and out of danger. Her dreams really mess with her head and you can see just how scared she is that both scenarios seemed to ‘happen’ and felt so real to her. Once Lila has a thought in her head, she can’t let it go, she has to go through with it and that’s what she does.  I did admire her. She was putting her life at risk to save her friends and other people in the long haul and at times I was shouting at her to stop being so stupid and to wait for Jay to come back, but as I;ve said, when Lilah has an idea, she didn’t back down and it got her into danger more than she’d like to be in.

I really liked Jay.I am a sucker for romance and even though this book isn’t filled with hearts and flowers, Jay is a sweetheart. You could see that Lila is his everything. That he loves her with everything he has and just wants to be with her. He hates living so far away from her for university and it kills him. Lila is his ONE. You really feel for him when Lila is frightened out of her mind and its scares the hell out of him not knowing what is wrong. I loved that when he heard her dream and her plan to stop it, he stuck by her, even though he was cautious about it, and went with her to help her out. Although he got angry at her, he understood her reason for doing what she had to do but he didn’t like it. You will see Jay love Lila, help her out, do the best he can to protect her and even save her. Everything he did for her during the book was down to his overpowering love he has for her. I understood everything he did was for her safety but in the end, he gets Lila forever. And that’s all he really wants.

I can’t really tell you how much more that this book touched me. It was powerful, it was haunting, it had me crying my eyes out, but it also had me smiling at the love the characters had for one another. How close they are, how much they were there for one another. This isn’t like a normal review from me, because I don’t want to spoil the plot. I WANT YOU to read it yourself, and hopefully understand why I didn’t spoil it for you. If you’re an avid follower, you know I read angsty books with a HEA. This book is so much more, and as I’ve said, well out of my comfort zone, but I will definitely be re-reading it. It had that much of an impact on me.

Megan Hart, I love you and Bitter Angel. This is one hell of a great debut and I hope everyone wil give this book a chance. It should be read by everyone and it is definitely on my FAVOURITE list!
